Process improvement of hybrid viewing-angle technology for energy-saving architecture on LCD
Some new designs with low power consumption of hybrid viewing-angle LCD are proposed in order to increase the rotating efficiency of liquid crystal molecules by tuning electric field and to reduce the loss of electric field from passivation layer. Firstly
a new type of liquid crystal with low voltage is used. Then the sequence of process on the color filter is changed
and the insulated passivation layer on the TFT side of glass substrate is patterned and thinned. There are two schemes for thinning. One is to make partial thinning on passivation layer directly
leaving some residual thickness. The other is to replace the residual thickness of passivation layer with SiO
x
layer. The characteristics of transmittance and electric field after changing design are simulated by the method of numerical analysis. These results of simulation show that the saturation voltage of this original architecture can be reduced from 5.4 V to 4.3 V by using low-voltage liquid crystal and the new design for thinning can further reduce the saturation voltage by 9.30% and 13.95% respectively. The decrease of saturation voltage on liquid crystal indicates that the operating voltage of liquid crystal on new architecture with energy-saving will be lower than that on the prior one
and then the overall power consumption of display panel will be reduced to satisfy the demand of hybrid viewing-angle LCD with low power consumption.
