    • Pretilt angle control of main-chain liquid crystal polymer in photoalignment process

    • Significant progress has been made in the research of liquid crystal photonic devices. The modulation of the azimuth and pre tilt angle of liquid crystals is widely used in various types of liquid crystal photonic devices. However, traditional methods for controlling the pre tilt angle of liquid crystals suffer from poor stability and susceptibility to external interference. Therefore, researchers have proposed a new method for controllable preparation based on the pre tilt angle of liquid crystal polymers. Liquid crystal polymers are an ideal choice for pre tilt angle control due to their high phase transition temperature, heat resistance, strong light resistance, and mechanical vibration resistance. However, due to the anchoring energy at the interface between liquid crystal and air, the pre tilt angle of liquid crystal polymer is related to the thickness of the liquid crystal layer, making it difficult to achieve stable and controllable control. To solve this problem, researchers used a two-step exposure method to induce the tilt of liquid crystal monomer RM257 in azo dye bright yellow (BY) thin films, and reduced the effect of interfacial anchoring energy between liquid crystal and air through multi-layer rotation and photopolymerization of liquid crystal monomer RM257. This innovative method enables the pre tilt angle of RM257 main chain liquid crystal polymer to be continuously adjustable between 0 ° and 16 °, and has the advantage of photothermal stability. This research achievement provides new material design ideas for the preparation of liquid crystal photonic devices, which is expected to promote the development of liquid crystal photonics and display devices.
