4-(4-vinylphenyl) benzoic acid-(4-vinyl) phenyl ester was prepared by the esterification of 4-(4-acetylphenyl) benzoic acid and 4-acetyl phenol
then reduction of the resulting carbonyl containing ester and dehydrolysis. The former acid was synthesized by biphenyl via Friedel-Crafts
bromination
Grignard reaction and oxidation reactions
and the later 4-acetylphenol was prepared by anisole via Friedel-Crafts and methyl elimination reactions. The total yield based on biphenyl is around 7%~10%
and the target product and intermediates were characterized by

H NMR and FT-IR
its liquid crystal properties was studied with Polarizing Optical Microscopy and Differential Scanning Calorimetry.
